Yukimatsu Gyoza, 餃子の無人販売店
Yukimatsu Gyoza is a small frozen dumpling shop in Minakami, Gunma Prefecture. It works as an unmanned store where customers take a box from a freezer and drop the payment into an open cash box.
The founding family developed the dumpling recipe over 80 years ago and has passed it down without changes since then. The shop has remained a small local operation throughout that time.
The name Yukimatsu combines the Japanese words for snow and pine tree, reflecting the snowy mountain setting of the Minakami area. The shop follows a Japanese tradition of unmanned roadside stores where customers serve themselves and leave payment in an open box on the honor system.
The shop is open around the clock and can be stopped at any time during a visit to the Minakami area. Bring the right amount in cash since there is no one to give change.
Despite the open cash box and no staff present, theft is reportedly very rare here, a reflection of how such honor-based shops function across Japan. Each box holds 36 pieces, which is enough for a small group to share in one sitting.
