Kodaira Hirakushi Denchu Art Museum

Kodaira Hirakushi Denchu Art Museum, Biographical art museum in Kodaira, Japan.

The Kodaira Hirakushi Denchu Art Museum displays wooden sculptures created by the artist across two connected buildings: his former home and a dedicated exhibition space. The rooms show his completed works alongside items from his personal life and creative practice.

The museum opened in 1984 in the residence where the sculptor spent his final decades working and living. The artist was recognized as one of Japan's masters of wooden sculpture and continued creating works throughout his very long life.

The sculptures on display reflect how the artist understood the human form and nature through traditional carving methods. You can observe the careful attention to detail in each piece and feel the connection between the artist and his materials.

The museum is about 45 minutes from central Tokyo by train and relatively easy to reach using public transportation. Allow enough time to walk through both the residence and the exhibition building, as there is much to see in each space.

The garden surrounding the site displays plum blossoms each late February, creating a seasonal change that visitors can witness. This living landscape was part of how the artist engaged with nature throughout his time in this place.
