観音松古墳

Kannonmatsu Kofun is an ancient burial mound in Takasaki that stretches 97 meters in length and features a stone chamber within. The inner chamber contains detailed wall paintings depicting celestial diagrams and mythological figures arranged across its surfaces.

The mound was constructed between the late 7th and early 8th centuries, a crucial period for understanding ancient burial practices in Japan. Its discovery in 1972 and designation as a Special Historic Site in 1973 underscored its importance as a window into this historical era.

The interior walls display groups of male and female figures alongside symbolic representations of the white tiger and blue dragon positioned on opposite sides. These paintings reveal the spiritual beliefs and afterlife concepts held by people during this era.

Access to the inner stone chamber is limited and requires advance planning, as only supervised visits are permitted. It is best to check current access conditions before visiting and wear appropriate footwear suited to the site terrain.

The colorful wall paintings inside mark a rare discovery for ancient Japanese burial chambers and display artistic detail from this early period. Such well-preserved paintings help researchers understand the artistic techniques and materials used during that time.
