Gwangju Wolgye-dong Janggobun

Gwangju Wolgye-dong Janggobun is a group of ancient burial mounds with interior burial chambers and stone structures scattered across the site. The layout shows different construction styles from this period of Korean archaeology.

The burial mounds date to the 5th and 6th centuries and came to light during construction of Gwangju Advanced Science Park in the 1990s. This discovery provided insight into the society and lifeways of early Korean history.

The tombs reflect how ancient communities honored their dead and what objects they considered important for the afterlife. Burial practices visible here show beliefs and social customs from that era of Korean society.

The site is accessible by public transportation and has informational displays about the archaeological discoveries. Visitors should allow enough time to walk around the different tombs and view the exhibition materials.

Wooden objects found in the tombs were remarkably preserved by soil moisture, offering rare glimpses into ancient craftsmanship and daily tools. This preservation of organic materials is unusual since wood typically decays over time.
