Cathedral of the Theotokos, Vilnius, Eastern Orthodox cathedral in Old Town, Vilnius, Lithuania.
The Cathedral of the Theotokos is an Eastern Orthodox cathedral built in brick in a Gothic style, standing in the Old Town of Vilnius near the Vilnele River. Its pointed arches and exposed red brick walls give the exterior a solid, medieval character that stands out among the surrounding buildings.
The cathedral was founded in the 14th century by Grand Duke Algirdas of Lithuania, who had it built for his Orthodox wife Uliana of Tver. It stands as one of the earliest traces of Eastern Christianity in the region.
The cathedral draws Orthodox Christians from across the city and beyond, especially during major feast days when the interior fills with candlelight and chanting. The contrast between the plain brick exterior and the gilded icons inside is something many visitors notice immediately upon entering.
The cathedral is on Maironio Street in the Old Town and easy to reach on foot from most central points of interest. If you plan to visit during a service, dress modestly and be prepared to stand, as Orthodox churches traditionally have no pews.
Archaeological research showed that some of the red bricks in the walls were taken from the nearby Gediminas Castle. This means the church was partly built with material recycled from one of the city's main medieval fortresses.
