Church of St. Anne, Vilnius, Gothic Catholic church in Old Town, Lithuania
The Church of St. Anne is a red brick building with three octagonal towers and many Gothic details that rise in the Old Town. The structure features carefully laid masonry that creates an intricate network of patterns and relief work across its surface.
An earlier wooden building was destroyed in 1419, leading to construction of this new stone church completed between 1495 and 1500. This construction happened during a period when Vilnius was strengthening its role as a religious center.
The church is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Old Town and shapes the character of Vilnius's historic center. Today it draws visitors interested in exploring the religious architecture and cultural heritage of the city.
The church is reached on foot through the Old Town pedestrian area where it stands easily visible. Visitors should note that opening hours vary and it is wise to check ahead whether the church is accessible for visits.
The elaborate facade required 33 different types of clay to create the intricate patterns and texture of the brickwork. This variety of materials shows the care that craftsmen invested in shaping this building.
