Žvėrynas Bridge, Steel bridge in Žvėrynas district, Vilnius, Lithuania
The Žvėrynas Bridge is a steel crossing over the Neris River in Vilnius that spans roughly 103 meters with stone piers supporting its metal framework. The structure rises about 11 meters above the water and connects two densely populated city districts.
The bridge was originally built from timber in 1892 and reconstructed in 1906 using steel and stone to establish a link with central Vilnius. This rebuild allowed it to handle growing traffic between the districts.
The bridge displays protective barricades from January 1991, marked by a commemorative stone honoring Lithuania's struggle for independence. This memorial shows how significant this crossing became during that pivotal moment.
The bridge sits on A. Mickevičiaus Street and connects the Naujamiestis area with the residential district of Žvėrynas. It is best explored on foot or by bicycle to take in views of the river and surrounding neighborhoods.
The bridge features LED lighting systems that project different colors at night, making the crossing a visual experience especially in the evening hours. These lights create a special display that can be viewed from both sides of the river.
