Veliuonos I piliakalnis

Veliuonos I piliakalnis is a hillfort situated on a rise near the Nemunas River with steep slopes and earthen ramparts that once provided defense. The elevated terrain rises noticeably above the surrounding landscape and features natural slopes that made it a good position for settlement.

The settlement began in the early centuries after Christ as a fortified community in what is now Lithuania. Archaeological findings indicate that people lived here over extended periods and adapted their way of life to changing circumstances.

This location served for centuries as a gathering place where early Lithuanian communities established their settlements and organized their daily lives. The remains show how people constructed their homes and created defensive structures to protect themselves.

The site is reachable from Veliuona town along marked walking paths with parking available at the base. Comfortable shoes are recommended as the trails are unpaved and can become slippery during wet weather.

Excavations here have revealed multiple stacked cultural layers showing that people returned to this spot repeatedly over time. These layers tell the story of how settlement patterns changed across different periods spanning centuries.
