Veliuonos piliakalniai, Archaeological hillfort complex in Veliuona Eldership, Lithuania
Veliuonos piliakalniai is a hillfort complex consisting of two earth mounds located near the Nemunas River. Ramybės kalnas rises to 32 meters, while Gedimino kapo kalnas is connected to it by deep defensive ditches that formed part of an ancient fortification system.
From the late 13th century to the 15th century, Junigedos Castle stood on Ramybės kalnas, facing repeated attacks from the Teutonic Knights. The fortress was destroyed in 1348, marking the end of this military stronghold.
A monument built in 1925 on Gedimino kapo kalnas honors Grand Duke Gediminas, keeping local traditions about him connected to this place. Visitors experience the site as a memorial that links the landscape to stories passed down through generations.
The site is accessible from Veliuona center via marked trails, with stairs installed to help visitors climb both hills and explore the surrounding areas. Wear comfortable shoes since you will be walking on slopes and uneven ground.
Excavations conducted between 1912 and 2003 uncovered a cultural layer 30 centimeters thick holding brass horseshoe brooches and medieval crossbow bolt tips. These discoveries reveal details about the daily lives and weaponry of those who lived here long ago.
