Satezele hillfort, Archaeological hillfort in Sigulda, Latvia
Satezele is an ancient fortified settlement built on elevated ground with earthwork walls that follow the natural contours near Vējupītes gravas. The layout takes advantage of the landscape's slopes to strengthen its defensive position.
The fortification began in the Bronze Age and remained in use until the 13th century. The arrival of the Livonian Crusade led to its eventual abandonment.
The site shows how early Baltic communities built and organized their fortified settlements. The remains reveal that such places served both as regular living areas and as refuge during periods of conflict.
The site sits in open countryside and requires sturdy footwear due to uneven and earthy paths. Visitors should prepare for changeable weather and allow time to explore the full terrain on foot.
The site earned official status as a state monument in 1998. Latvia is home to roughly 470 documented hillforts from different periods, highlighting the region as a center of ancient Baltic fortifications.
