Božu Ūdenskrātuve, lac letton
Božu Ūdenskrātuve is a large artificial reservoir in Babīte Parish covering about 47.5 hectares and stretching roughly 1.4 kilometers in length. The water varies in depth, reaching up to 9 meters (30 feet) in some places, and features a sandy bottom with two small islands covered in grass and shrubs.
The reservoir was created more than 60 years ago in the 1970s by flooding a sand quarry and adjacent floodplain areas. This construction originally served as a water storage facility for the surrounding communities and permanently reshaped the landscape.
The reservoir is known locally as a gathering place for fishing enthusiasts and swimmers, where you can observe how people spend their free time along the water. Different shoreline sections reveal different uses: some areas have houses and camps, while others remain open spaces for walking and bird watching.
The most accessible areas for swimming and walking are found along the southeastern shore, where paths and beach sections exist. When visiting, wear flat shoes or water shoes, especially on sandy banks, and if fishing or boating, keep in mind the varying water depths across the lake.
The reservoir is known for its population of different fish species including pike, perch, and carp, making it popular with anglers. In winter the water surface freezes, leading to uncontrolled driving on the ice, though this practice remains dangerous.
