Tērvete Sanatorium
Tērvete Sanatorium is a national architectural monument in Latvia completed in 1932. The structure was built with a reinforced concrete frame to accommodate 250 patients, measuring 152 meters in length across four stories with wide corridors three meters across and high ceilings 3.5 meters tall.
Founded in 1924, the main building was constructed between 1930 and 1932 based on designs by architect Klinklāvs. It became the largest and most advanced tuberculosis treatment facility in the Baltic region during that era.
Access is accessible for people with mobility limitations since there are no thresholds in the wards or corridors. The building sits in a quiet setting with park grounds where visitors can walk around the facilities.
The building displays functionalist design with horizontal rows of windows and is decorated with two sculptures by artist Kārlis Zemdega depicting human struggle against illness. This artistic touch adds cultural character to the otherwise practical architecture.
