Church of the Theotokos of Zaum, Medieval Orthodox church in Trpejca, North Macedonia.
The Church of the Theotokos of Zaum is a medieval religious building standing on the eastern shore of Lake Ohrid at the foot of Mount Galichica. The structure features traditional Orthodox church elements and contains interior frescoes from the 14th century.
The church was built in 1299 and received its interior frescoes around 1361, about 60 years after its construction. An inscription above the main entrance records the date when these paintings were completed.
The church displays a rare fresco showing the Mother of God nursing the Christ Child, a subject that was unusual in Orthodox Christian tradition. This imagery reflects a distinct spiritual focus of the local community.
The church is only accessible by boat because it sits isolated along the lake shoreline. Visitors should inquire in nearby villages about boat transportation options.
The church belongs to the Debar-Kičevo Diocese and has kept its original 14th-century structural elements despite centuries of exposure to the lake's moisture. The durability of the building demonstrates how such medieval structures endure through time.
