Galičica, Mountain summit in Galičica National Park, North Macedonia
Galičica, also known as Magaro, is a mountain summit that rises between Lake Ohrid and Lake Prespa. The peak features steep slopes with changing vegetation at different elevations and clear views across both lakes.
The mountain has served as a crossing point between two lake regions since ancient times, where different cultures met. Archaeological evidence shows humans have inhabited this area for thousands of years.
Local communities have long gathered medicinal herbs and grazed livestock on the slopes, shaping how the land looks today. You can still see the effects of these practices when walking through the different elevations.
Marked hiking trails are accessible from spring through autumn and begin from nearby towns at lower elevations. Wear sturdy footwear and bring plenty of water, as the exposed slopes mean weather can change quickly.
From the summit you can see two lakes at different elevations lying side by side, creating an unusual geographic view. This arrangement makes the panorama from the peak particularly memorable for visitors.
