Murtala Muhammed International Airport, International airport in Ikeja, Nigeria
Murtala Muhammed International Airport is an international airport in Ikeja, Lagos State, with two terminals serving domestic and international connections across Africa. Shared runways link both areas and enable flight operations to numerous destinations on the continent.
The facility began during World War II as a military installation and received its current name in 1976 following the assassination of General Murtala Muhammed. He was the fourth military ruler of the country and was honored through the renaming after his death.
The terminals display works from Nigeria through traditional sculptures and contemporary paintings representing different ethnic communities. These exhibitions give visitors insight into the artistic and craft traditions found across the nation.
Currency exchange, medical services, and prayer rooms are available throughout the complex and help during longer stays. Car rental desks and taxis operate from the arrival areas and offer different options for onward travel into the city.
The newer terminal was completed in 2022 and draws design inspiration from Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam. Its capacity reaches 14 million passengers per year and expands travel possibilities considerably.
