Kalakuta museum, Memorial museum in Ikeja, Nigeria.
Kalakuta Museum is a three-story building in Ikeja that displays personal items, musical instruments, and living spaces of Nigerian musician Fela Kuti. The house contains his preserved bedroom, his saxophone, and other objects from his everyday life.
The original Kalakuta complex was established in the 1970s as the musician's residence and recording studio in Surulere. In 1977, soldiers destroyed the site, burning master tapes, equipment, the recording studio, and a medical clinic.
The museum displays photographs, posters, paintings, and murals that show Fela Kuti's impact on Nigerian music and political activism. These items reveal how his work shaped thinking and conversation far beyond music itself.
The museum is located on Gbemisola Street in Ikeja and offers guided tours through the rooms. There is also a rooftop cafe and air-conditioned rooms available for overnight stays.
The name Kalakuta comes from Fela's prison time, when inmates used a Swahili word for rascal to describe their shared cell. This origin shows how the place drew its identity from difficult experiences.
