University of Lagos Library, Academic library in Akoka, Lagos, Nigeria
The University of Lagos Library is an academic facility with three floors and an underground level, accommodating about 800 readers. It houses roughly 250,000 volumes across various disciplines and operates through an online catalog system.
The library was founded in 1962 under the direction of its first librarian, Elizabeth M. Moys, operating from temporary spaces initially. The current building became operational in 1965.
The library serves as a vital hub for students and researchers across Nigeria, offering access to specialized academic databases and local publications. It functions as a central meeting place for scholarly work in the city.
Visitors can access specialized academic databases like ScienceDirect and JSTOR through the online catalog system, with extended hours during exam periods. When arriving, it helps to ask staff at the desk for guidance on navigating the different sections.
The building houses a newly developed Makerspace on the first floor and provides a Tablet Loan Service for digital access. These modern additions make the facility far more than a traditional book and document repository.
