Shitta-Bey Mosque, Islamic mosque in Lagos, Nigeria
The Shitta-Bey Mosque is an Islamic place of worship in Lagos featuring Brazilian-influenced design with white walls, geometric patterns, and traditional minarets. It accommodates roughly 200 worshippers and stands on Martins Ereko Street on Lagos Island.
Construction took place between 1891 and 1894 under architect João Batista da Costa, with funding from Nigerian-Sierra Leonean businessman Mohammed Shitta-Bey. The completion of the work marked an important moment in Lagos religious history.
The mosque serves as a gathering place for Lagos Muslims, where daily prayers and religious education happen. Islamic festivals bring the community together for celebrations and shared worship.
Access is from Martins Ereko Street on Lagos Island, where regular prayer times are observed throughout the day. Visitors should dress modestly and respect prayer times for a respectful visit.
The title 'Bey' was granted to founder Mohammed Shitta by Ottoman Sultan Abdulhamid II during the 1894 inauguration. This rare honor shows the international connections and importance the building held from its very opening.
