Nigerian National Museum, Lagos

Nigerian National Museum, Lagos, National museum in Lagos Island, Nigeria

The Nigerian National Museum in Lagos Island is a large collection of artwork and objects from different parts of Nigeria. The galleries hold carved figures, drums, textiles, pottery, and archaeological finds organized across multiple floors.

The museum was founded in 1957 and started with a collection of traditional masks from the Cross River region. Over time, the collection grew as objects from all parts of the country were acquired and added to the galleries.

Inside, ceremonial costumes and masks from different Nigerian regions reflect the spiritual and artistic traditions of local communities. These objects show how different groups expressed their beliefs and values through clothing, carving, and decoration.

Allow time to walk through the different sections and examine the objects carefully. A guide or audio information helps you understand what each piece represents and where it comes from.

A black Mercedes-Benz car on the grounds serves as a memorial to an event from 1976. This vehicle is visible to visitors but often goes unnoticed despite its role as a historical marker.
