Abuja National Mosque

Abuja National Mosque, National mosque in Central District, Nigeria

Abuja National Mosque is a mosque in the Central District of Nigeria's capital, built in Islamic architectural style with widely visible elements. A large golden central dome rises between four smaller domes, while four slender minarets define the silhouette and reach far above the surrounding cityscape.

The Nigerian government began construction in 1984 when the capital moved from Lagos to Abuja. The work ended in 1991 and created a central place for religious gatherings in the new capital.

The name reflects its role as a national center for the country's Muslim community, which gathers here on Fridays and religious festivals. Visitors notice the golden domes paired with regional building elements, making Nigerian Islam visible in the architecture.

The interior offers space for thousands of people who gather during religious events, with men and women using separate areas. Adjacent rooms house a library and conference section, and a market for textiles and carpets sits next to the main building.

The building stands opposite the National Christian Centre, placing the two main religions of the country in direct proximity. This spatial arrangement symbolizes the religious diversity that sets Nigeria apart from other African states.
