Okeluse Forest Reserve

Okeluse Forest Reserve is a protected forest in Ondo State featuring dense tropical vegetation and varied terrain shaped by multiple streams. The forest contains distinct ecological zones that support different plant and animal communities throughout its landscape.

The reserve was established during the colonial period to protect Nigeria's forests and support sustainable forestry practices. It has since developed into a key conservation area for the region's natural resources.

Access is easiest from Benin City, where you can arrange a local guide to navigate the forest trails safely. The paths can be slippery and uneven, so sturdy footwear and readiness for changing conditions are important.

The forest shelters rare animals including forest elephants, chimpanzees, and several monkey species that are difficult to spot elsewhere. These large mammals rely on the forest's depth for refuge and movement.
