Okomu Forest Reserve, Protected forest area in Edo State, Nigeria
The Okomu Forest Reserve spans 1081 square kilometers of rainforest ecosystem, situated 50 kilometers west of Benin City in southern Nigeria.
The British colonial administration established the Okomu Forest Reserve in 1912, later expanding it by 411 square kilometers in 1935 to protect timber resources.
The Ijaw and Edo communities maintain traditional connections to the forest through ceremonies and agricultural practices passed down through generations.
The reserve operates under a system where local farmers receive designated sections for cultivation, followed by mandatory reforestation of their allocated areas.
The forest houses 33 mammal species and 150 bird species, including forest elephants and white-throated guenons within its protected boundaries.
