Okomu Forest Reserve

Okomu Forest Reserve is a rainforest area in southern Nigeria that spreads across a large expanse west of Benin City. The forest consists of thick vegetation and is home to numerous animals including elephants and monkeys.

British colonial authorities established this forest reserve in the early 20th century to protect timber resources. The protected area was enlarged later to include more woodland under conservation.

Local communities continue to perform traditional ceremonies and farming activities that have been part of their lives for generations. These practices shape how people relate to the forest today.

Access is available on foot with marked paths throughout the forest. Visitors should bring comfortable shoes and weather protection, as the climate is warm and humid.

An old system operates here where farmers cultivate designated sections and must then replant them to restore the forest. This approach balances farming needs with long-term woodland conservation.
