Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, Art museum in Rotterdam, Netherlands
Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen is an art museum in Rotterdam housing a collection from medieval paintings to contemporary installations. The holdings include Dutch masters of the 17th century, Italian drawings, French impressionists, and objects from design and applied arts.
A lawyer bequeathed his art collection to the city in the 19th century, and the institution opened its doors a few years later. After relocating in the 1930s, a second major donation gave the venue its current double name.
The institution takes its name from two collectors whose donations formed the foundation, and brings together paintings, sculptures, and applied arts from several periods under one roof. Visitors walk through rooms where Flemish altarpieces stand alongside surrealist works and applied arts from different centuries.
The main collection is currently accessible in a separate depot building while the original venue remains closed. Visitors can explore the public areas of the depot, where art is stored behind glass in climate-controlled rooms.
The new depot has a mirrored exterior that reflects the sky and surrounding city, changing color depending on the weather. Visitors can see conservators working on paintings inside and observe thousands of objects stored on shelves and in crates.
