MuZIEum

MuZIEum is a museum in Nijmegen offering guided experiences in complete darkness where visitors navigate specially designed spaces using non-visual senses. The exhibitions are structured so that exploration happens through touch, sound, and smell rather than sight.

The museum began as a local initiative to establish a permanent educational center about visual impairment in the Netherlands. This founding represented a new approach to making sensory differences understandable through direct experience.

Blind and visually impaired guides lead visitors through exhibitions, sharing personal experiences and how they navigate daily life. This direct encounter offers insight into different ways of perceiving the world.

Visits must be booked in advance online and are available daily at different time slots with tours typically lasting 90 minutes. It helps to wear comfortable clothing and to understand the museum's safety procedures before entering the dark spaces.

Visitors take part in taste experiments without sight, learning to identify flavors and textures through heightened sensory awareness. This sensory training shows how people with vision loss manage everyday activities like eating.
