De Grote Broek, Cultural center and music venue in central Nijmegen, Netherlands.
De Grote Broek is a cultural center in Nijmegen with residential cooperatives, a cafe, and a music venue located across different floors and building sections. The project combines living spaces with public cultural areas, including a basement room for concerts and art exhibitions.
The building was originally founded in 1984 under a different name and later purchased by the city of Nijmegen in 2002. This acquisition allowed the alternative project to become officially recognized and continue operating as a legalized cultural institution.
The center functions as a hub for independent artists and self-governed collectives, reflecting its anarchist roots in how decisions are made and spaces are shared. People from different creative fields gather here to organize performances, exhibitions, and social events on their own terms.
The center provides spaces for eating at the cafe and attending music events, with different areas separately accessible for different activities. It helps to check in advance which events or opening times apply to the specific sections you want to visit.
The center houses an anarchist library called De Zwarte Uil that collects books and zines on political and artistic topics. This collection reflects the independent thinking that shapes the entire project.
