Brunssummerheide, Protected nature area in Brunssum, Netherlands.
Brunssummerheide is a protected nature area comprising purple heathlands mixed with coniferous woodlands, open sandy plains, and mineral-rich streams flowing through the terrain. The landscape covers around 2,100 hectares and connects several different habitat types within a single area.
The area received official protection status in 2013, becoming recognized as the largest heathland expanse in Limburg province. This designation established formal management practices to maintain its ecological value.
Shepherds continue to guide their flocks through the heathlands as part of traditional land management that shapes how the landscape looks and functions today. This practice keeps the open heaths visible and prevents the natural succession toward forest.
The area has marked trails suitable for hiking, cycling, and mountain biking, with some paths built for wheelchair users. Spring through autumn offers the most comfortable walking conditions and the most rewarding views of flowering plants.
The Roode Beek stream displays a distinctive reddish color caused by iron-rich soil in the surrounding area. This natural feature catches visitors' attention and reveals the mineral composition beneath the landscape.
