Twistvliet bridge, Cable-stayed bridge in Zwolle, Netherlands
The Twistvliet Bridge is a cable-stayed bridge in Zwolle that crosses the Zwarte Water river and connects two residential areas of the city. It serves pedestrians, cyclists, and vehicles while allowing boat traffic to pass through on scheduled occasions.
The name comes from an estate purchased in 1800 and renamed by its new owner. The bridge was later built to connect different parts of the growing city with modern cable-stayed engineering.
A memorial plaque on the bridge honors three crew members of Lancaster PM-D 722 aircraft who perished in a nearby crash on May 21, 1944.
Access for pedestrians and cyclists is available from both sides, with traffic flowing continuously under normal conditions. Visitors should be aware that the bridge opens regularly for boat traffic, which may cause brief delays for other users.
Next to the bridge stands a striking triangular red building that serves as the control center for several other bridges in the city. This small control house manages the operation of multiple crossings and reveals the technical infrastructure behind urban traffic management.
