The Maagjesbolwerk is an architectural complex in central Zwolle that combines apartments, shops, and parking within a base structure about 10 meters (33 feet) high. The building sits within the urban fabric and its shape reflects the historical bastion that once occupied this ground.
This site was part of Zwolle's medieval fortification system and served as a bastion for centuries. In 2003 a new building replaced the historical structure while keeping the distinctive pointed shape and location intact.
The name 'Maagjesbolwerk' comes from the bastion that once stood on this spot. Today it serves as a living space where residents and visitors move through shops and apartments, connecting the city's past with its everyday present.
The complex sits in the heart of Zwolle and is easily accessible on foot from the city center. Visitors will find retail shops to browse and a parking facility if arriving by car.
The building was designed by architect Hans Ruijssenaars, known for innovative design work. Many visitors do not realize how cleverly the structure transformed an old fortification site into modern urban space that people use daily.
