Stedelijk Museum Zwolle, Contemporary art museum in Zwolle, Netherlands
Stedelijk Museum Zwolle was an art museum located in a historic building at Melkmarkt 41, displaying contemporary works and regional historical exhibitions across multiple gallery spaces. The venue offered both modern artistic works and insights into local heritage.
The museum was founded in 1996 and became the cultural center of Zwolle until 2017, when its collection was transferred to the Historical Center Overijssel. This shift marked the end of the institution as an independent venue.
The venue was an important space for Dutch artists like Pieter van Noort and Hendrick ten Oever, whose works were regularly displayed here. The galleries also presented international contemporary art alongside regional works.
The building at Melkmarkt now houses ANNO Stadsmuseum Zwolle, which features exhibitions about local history and heritage. Visitors can find information about the city's past in a protected historic building in the city center.
A major fire broke out just two weeks before the museum closed in 2017, causing substantial damage to the building. This incident ultimately hastened the decision to relocate the collection elsewhere.
