Belgenmonument Ede, World War I memorial in Ede, Netherlands
The Belgenmonument is a stone monument in Ede positioned at the intersection of two former main streets of a wartime refugee camp. It stands at the location where Belgian refugees built their temporary settlement during World War I.
Between 1915 and 1918, a large refugee camp was established in Ede to provide shelter for Belgian people during the war. The settlement grew into a largely self-sufficient community with its own infrastructure and organization.
The memorial carries an inscription in Dutch that honors the Belgian refugees who lived here during the war. The stone marks a place that once served as the center of a temporary community for these displaced people.
The monument is located near the intersection of Hessenweg and Verlengde Arnhemseweg and can be easily found using GPS. The site is freely accessible and can be visited at any time of day.
The refugee camp was divided into three sectors named after Belgian rivers, each forming separate residential areas. The settlement even had its own power plant that generated electricity for the entire community.
