The facility opened in 1993 and served immediately as the host venue for ice hockey during the 1994 Winter Olympics. It staged 21 games, including the final match of the tournament.
The name honors a medieval Norwegian king, chosen by the Lillehammer Municipal Council in 1988. Locals and visitors use the space regularly for sports competitions and training across many different disciplines.
The venue is located in Stampesletta and easily accessible by public transportation. Check the event calendar ahead of your visit, as programming varies by season and what sports are scheduled.
The roof sections rest on double trussed beams made from glued laminated timber, a construction innovation of the 1990s. This method allowed the creation of a large unsupported span overhead, something notable for the era.
