Arctic Cathedral, Heritage church in Tromsdalen, Norway
The Arctic Cathedral is a modern church building in Tromsø, Norway, featuring a striking triangular shape formed by eleven aluminum-coated concrete panels on each side. The structure is visible from across the Tromsø Sound and from the bridge connecting to the area.
The building opened in November 1965 following architect Jan Inge Hovig's design, which drew inspiration from the twin-peaked island of Håja located near Tromsø. This approach merged the northern landscape with contemporary church architecture.
The eastern wall features a large glass mosaic by Victor Sparre showing God's hand radiating light through Jesus and two human figures. This artwork shapes the interior light and creates a shifting visual effect throughout the day.
The building is open to visitors on most days, though hours may vary depending on services and events held there. It helps to check current visiting conditions beforehand to ensure access is available.
The organ inside contains around 2940 pipes installed in 1976, crafted from pine wood and reindeer hide. The pipes range dramatically in size, from several meters to just a few millimeters, creating an impressive acoustic instrument.
