Description
Bismarckturm was a memorial tower in Kościuszki Park, Katowice, constructed from local sandstone with a square base. The structure rose to a height of about 19 meters and stood on a solid foundation typical of such monuments.
History
The tower was built in 1903 with donations from Upper Silesian industrialists to honor German Chancellor Otto von Bismarck. It was demolished in 1934 as political circumstances in the region underwent fundamental changes.
Culture
The structure displayed bronze medallions featuring Bismarck's portrait and the imperial eagle, created at the Gerdes foundry in Katowice. These artworks reflected the esteem held for the German Chancellor in the region.
Practical
The tower no longer stands, but its original location in the park can still be visited and explored today. Visitors can walk through the area and learn about its history through available information and local resources.
