St. Michael's church, Katowice, Gothic wooden church in Kościuszko Park, Poland.
St. Michael's Church is a timber building in Katowice with a square nave, narrower chancel, and steep pitched roofs covered with wood shingles. A slender turret on the ridge adds to its distinctive wooden profile.
Built in 1487 in the village of Syrynia, the structure was relocated to its current location in Kościuszko Park in 1938. This move was part of an effort to preserve historical wooden buildings and make them accessible to the public.
Inside are a late-Gothic sculpture of Mary and the Child Jesus from the early 16th century and a stone holy water basin from the 15th century. These pieces help visitors understand how medieval craftsmen created objects for worship.
The church sits within a park and is easy to reach on foot via maintained pathways. Note that wooden structures require ongoing care, so occasional conservation work may affect visiting conditions.
The structure was built using minimally processed half-round logs tied together with simple wrapping methods, showing medieval carpentry at its most fundamental. This building technique is visible throughout the exterior and helps visitors understand how craftspeople worked in that era.
