Kriegs- und Zivilgefangenenlager Zittau, Military camp in Porajów, Poland
The Kriegs- und Zivilgefangenenlager Zittau is a former prisoner compound in Porajów situated on the eastern bank of the Lausitzer Neiße river. Multiple buildings remain on the site directly across from the German town of Zittau.
The camp opened in May 1945 under Soviet command as a detention site for German soldiers and civilians displaced from Bohemia. It served as a processing center during the immediate postwar period.
The camp maintained separate sections for different groups, including Wehrmacht personnel, German officers, Austrian soldiers, and NSDAP officials during its operation.
The railway line between Zittau and Liberec runs through the area, reflecting the historical transport connections in this region. Visitors can view the former camp location from both sides of the river.
Since 1963 the buildings were converted into a public hospital treating patients with neurological and psychiatric conditions. The transformation marks a shift from wartime detention to modern medical care.
