Weinaupark, Public park in Zittau, Germany.
Weinaupark sprawls across the eastern edge of Zittau alongside the B99 road, presenting itself as a spacious green area dotted with many trees and shrubs. The grounds follow English garden style and connect multiple sections through a network of paths.
The city of Zittau acquired the land in 1570 from a religious knightly order and later transformed it from swampland into a mineral water spa destination. This conversion took place between 1824 and 1826 and marked a pivotal shift in the area's development.
The grounds house the Tierpark Zittau zoo and a stadium, where sports events and community gatherings have taken place since 1893. These venues continue to shape how local people spend their leisure time.
Multiple walking paths connect different sections of the grounds, and benches are placed throughout the area. Direct access to public transit makes it straightforward to reach the location and explore its various corners.
The name Weinau comes from three former vineyards that stretched from Eckartsberg heights down to this area. Peat extraction was so extensive in the 1800s that thousands of bricks were produced here each year.
