Dom Handlowy Zenit, Modern department store in Katowice, Poland.
Dom Handlowy Zenit is a modern shopping building with seven floors and a glass facade located at Rynek 12. The interior contains retail spaces and offices, with a grocery section situated on the lower level.
The building replaced the Hotel Welt, which had been Katowice's oldest hotel since 1848, when it opened on September 4, 1962. Architect Mieczysław Król designed this project to represent the city's economic renewal.
The building received its name through a public competition, showing how the community helped shape this shopping center during Poland's post-war economic transformation. It represents the shift toward commercial activity in the city's recovery.
Elevators connect the main levels and lead to shopping areas on the lower floors. Visitors can easily find the main entrance on Rynek, with nearby cafes and restaurants around the square.
The glass facade underwent significant renovation between 2008 and 2010, overseen by Rafał Król, the son of the original architect. This shows how a family legacy shaped the preservation of the building's architectural character across generations.
