House of the Scientist

House of the Scientist, Modernist residential building in Plac Grunwaldzki, Poland

The House of the Scientist is a ten-story residential building at Plac Grunwaldzki designed in the modernist style of the 1960s. Its exterior shows typical features of that era with clean lines and functional design, while the interior contains numerous apartments for academic residents.

The structure was built between 1959 and 1961 as the first modernist high-rise in Wroclaw during the post-World War II reconstruction era. It emerged as a response to the severe housing shortage and established new standards for urban architecture of that period.

The building was designed as a home for scholars and university teachers, shaping how people live and connect at this location. Residents form a community linked by shared academic interests that has influenced the neighborhood's character.

The building is centrally located near university facilities and easily accessible by public transportation. Visitors can freely explore the exterior and surroundings, though the interior contains mostly private residences.

Architect Jadwiga Grabowska-Hawrylak significantly shaped the project with her innovative approach to residential design. Her work demonstrated that modern buildings could meet social needs while establishing new aesthetic standards.
