Targ Drzewny in Gdańsk

Targ Drzewny is a rectangular square in the heart of Gdańsk's Old Town that connects four main streets and serves as a traffic hub. The area is surrounded by residential buildings and shops, with a central green space and a monument at its core.

The square was first documented in 1581 as the city's timber trading center during a period of commercial growth. A significant execution took place here in 1659 during the local witch trial period.

The square's name comes from its original purpose as a timber market, and it remains a central meeting point in the heart of the Old Town today. The green space with the monument creates a place where history and daily life meet naturally.

The square is easily accessible on foot and connects several major paths through the Old Town. It is an open area with limited weather protection, so it is best visited during pleasant conditions.

About 20 people faced witch trial accusations at this location, making it a significant site in one of the darkest periods of the city's judicial history. These tragic events are now known only through historical records, yet they left a deep mark on the city's memory.
