Castle in Lubawa, Gothic castle in Lubawa, Poland
The Castle in Lubawa is a stone fortress with tall towers and Gothic architectural elements, rising from elevated ground on the town's northern side. The complex displays the solid, imposing structure typical of medieval fortifications with its thick walls and defensive tower formations.
The fortress was founded in 1400 as a residence for the bishops of Chelmno, serving as both a religious and administrative center in the region. Major architectural modifications occurred in the early 1600s under new leadership and changing needs.
The structure stands as a representation of religious authority and medieval architecture, registered in the Polish cultural heritage monuments list.
The site is easy to reach from Lubawa town center by following signposts, with parking available near the entrance area. Visitors should note the elevated terrain and uneven surfaces, so comfortable shoes are recommended for exploring the grounds.
Bishop Jakub Zadzik transformed the Gothic fortress into a Baroque palace in 1627, adding new architectural elements to the original structure.
