Wikipedia Monument, Public sculpture at Frankfurt Square, Slubice, Poland
The Wikipedia Monument shows four figures lifting together a spherical puzzle piece that recalls the logo of the online encyclopedia. The base beneath the figures is shaped like stacked books and carries inscriptions in several languages.
The unveiling took place on October 22, 2014, making this work the first permanent sculpture worldwide dedicated to contributors of an online encyclopedia. The initiative emerged through cooperation between an academic institution and the municipal government.
Inscriptions on the base appear in three languages, showing how people from different countries build knowledge together. This multilingual approach fits naturally into the border location, where Polish and German cultures meet every day.
The work stands freely accessible on Frankfurt Square near the German-Polish border. You can reach the spot on foot from the town center and view the sculpture from all directions.
Armenian artist Mihran Hakobjan designed the work while studying at Collegium Polonicum, a German-Polish university institution. Funding came from the town hall, which turned a student's idea into a lasting public work.
