Chatka pod Śnieżnikiem, Mountain bunker in Śnieżnik Massif, Poland.
Chatka pod Śnieżnikiem is a small wooden hut on the northeastern slope of Mount Śnieżnik in Poland, sitting at around 1170 meters (3,840 feet) above sea level amid spruce and fir forest. The single-story building has two rooms, each equipped with a tiled stove and wooden bunk beds for basic overnight stays.
The hut first appeared on maps in 1936, when it was used by naturalists as a base for scientific fieldwork across the Śnieżnik Massif. Over the following years it grew into a regular stopping point for researchers studying the ecology and wildlife of the area.
The hut is a natural stopping point where hikers from both sides of the Polish-Czech border tend to pause and share stories. A long-standing habit among mountain walkers here is to leave behind a small supply of food or matches for the next person passing through.
The hut is reached by foot along marked hiking trails and offers basic overnight shelter, but there is no running water so bringing your own supply is necessary. Mountain weather here can change quickly, so setting out prepared for rain or cold is a good idea regardless of the season.
The hut sits right at the edge of a protected nature reserve and also marks a junction where hiking trails cross from Poland into the Czech Republic. From this single point, a walker can continue in either direction across the border without retracing steps.
