'Unicorn; a Place for Stars', Steel sculpture in Katedralna, Łódź, Poland.
Unicorn; a Place for Stars is a 2.5-meter-tall steel sculpture depicting a partial figure that gradually dissolves into particles toward its rear. The work merges a realistic front form with an abstract dispersal, creating a visual transition between solid and ethereal elements.
The sculpture resulted from a design competition in 2017 and was commissioned from Japanese artist Tomohiro Inaba. It was installed at its current location on June 7, 2019, becoming a milestone in the city's contemporary art development.
The sculpture blends Japanese artistic techniques with Polish urban culture, creating a bridge between two distinct artistic worlds. Visitors naturally engage with it as a contemporary symbol of aspiration and imagination, making it a shared focal point in the city.
The sculpture stands at the intersection of Marszałka Józefa Piłsudskiego Avenue and Piotrkowska Street, near the Tram Station Centrum. The location is easily accessible on foot and well-served by public transport connections throughout the city.
The work was funded through community voting and invites viewers to mentally complete the unfinished form. This engagement between artwork and observer creates a personal, individual experience of the piece for each visitor.
