Stara Orunia Reservoir

Stara Orunia Reservoir is an underground water storage building made of brick with classical architectural elements including columns and arches. Inside, it contains multiple chambers with vaulted ceilings designed to hold and protect water supplies.

This structure was built in 1869 to meet the city's growing need for clean water supply. It was part of a larger project that transported water from distant sources into the urban area.

The structure demonstrates skilled craftsmanship visible today in its brick walls and vaulted ceilings. Visitors can observe how the design reflects the engineering knowledge needed to store and manage water safely over time.

Access is by way of streets in the district with signage directing visitors. It is advisable to wear comfortable shoes since the interior is underground and the floor can be uneven.

The underground chambers now shelter several bat species and function as one of the region's major winter habitats. Conservation groups regularly monitor the populations of these flying mammals.
