Eburobrittium, cultural heritage monument in Óbidos, Portugal
Eburobrittium is a Roman city near Gaeiras whose remains are today accessible as an archaeological site. The grounds display wall remains, paved roads, and building foundations from ancient times that show the layout of this old settlement.
The city was inhabited from the first century BC to the fifth century AD and served as a trading point by the ancient lagoon. Residents later left the location to move to higher ground, where the castle of Óbidos now stands.
The name Eburobrittium comes from Roman times and refers to the settlement by the lagoon. Visitors can see today how the city was laid out as a trading place and how residents used their proximity to water.
The grounds require comfortable shoes since you walk over uneven terrain and cross open spaces. It is best to visit the site in good weather to fully enjoy the ruins and the natural surroundings.
The place was mentioned by Roman historian Pliny the Elder, who described it between two other ancient cities. This ancient reference makes the site an important part of documented Roman history on the Iberian Peninsula.
