Barragem de Maranhão

The Barragem de Maranhão is a concrete dam in northern Alentejo that spans the river valley and creates a large water reservoir. This installation combines a hydroelectric generator and storage lake in one structure that supports farming and power supply across surrounding areas.

The dam was built in 1957 as part of Portugal's modernization plan to boost electricity generation during the mid-twentieth century. It became an important project for expanding hydropower use in the Portalegre region.
