Plage de Baleeira is a small beach tucked inside the harbor of Albufeira, on the Algarve coast in Portugal. The sand is shaped like a shell, bordered by cliffs and low vegetation, with a clear view of the Farol da Albufeira lighthouse from the shoreline.
The beach takes its name from the whaling tradition that once defined this stretch of coast, showing how closely the local community depended on the sea. Over time, the area shifted from whaling to small-scale fishing, and the harbor gradually became what it is today.
The name Baleeira means whale beach in Portuguese, a direct reference to the whaling activity that once took place here. Today, small fishing boats still dot the nearby harbor, giving the spot a traditional coastal feel that connects the present to the past.
The beach is reached by a dirt road leading to a small parking area, from which you walk down a rough path to get to the sand. Sturdy footwear is a good idea since the path is uneven, and it is worth checking the tide before you go as high tide can cover part of the beach.
At low tide the beach reveals a full shell-shaped stretch of sand, but at high tide most of it disappears under water. This means the beach looks completely different depending on when you arrive, making timing your visit part of the experience.
