The Maramureș Mountains Natural Park extends over 148,850 hectares of mountainous terrain, containing diverse ecosystems with numerous plant and animal species.
Established in 2005 as a category V IUCN protected area, the park preserves natural landscapes that reflect centuries of interaction between local communities and nature.
The park region maintains traditional wooden architecture, agricultural practices, and mountain shepherding methods that form part of Romanian mountain heritage.
Visitors can explore marked hiking trails throughout the park, with main access points located near the towns of Borsa and Viseu de Sus.
The Vaser Valley railway carries passengers through remote sections of the park using a steam locomotive on the last functioning forestry line in Europe.
