イザの青い泉の洞窟

The Blue Spring Cave of Iza is an extensive cave system in the Rodna Mountains, winding through limestone formations and containing underground waterfalls and multiple passages. The network extends for several kilometers and offers visitors deep insights into the geological structures of this mountain region.

The nature reserve received official protection status in 1977 through national environmental legislation. This recognition marked a significant milestone for Romanian conservation efforts in the region.

Local potters maintain traditional ceramic workshops near the reserve, continuing centuries-old craftsmanship techniques specific to the Maramures region.

Visitors can reach the area via a gravel road from National Road 17C leading to Preluca Izei meadow, where parking facilities are available. The best time to visit is during warmer months when the paths are dry and easily walkable.

The cave system displays unusual water flow patterns where water moves contrary to the natural downhill direction. This reversed flow occurs due to interactions between Eocene limestone and the crystalline schist surrounding the formation.
