Verkhovyna National Nature Park, National nature park in Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast, Ukraine.
Verkhovyna National Nature Park is a protected area across the Chivchino-Grinyava mountain range spanning 12,023 hectares and encompassing the source areas of two Cheremosh River tributaries. The terrain transitions from mixed forests at lower elevations to alpine pine stands at higher zones, creating distinct ecological habitats within a compact space.
The park was established in 2010 to protect geological formations including ancient metamorphic rocks and Jurassic limestone boulders formed over millions of years. This designation marked an important step in preserving the unique geological and biological character of the Carpathian region.
The region preserves Hutsul traditions through workshops where visitors learn from local artisans how to paint decorated eggs, carve wood, and build musical instruments by hand. These craft practices remain central to local identity and continue to shape community life in the area.
The park features hiking trails that cross different elevation zones, taking visitors from mixed forests to alpine pine areas. A management office organizes educational programs, and it is advisable to arrive with proper equipment and season-appropriate clothing since conditions vary considerably by altitude.
The area contains hanging swamps positioned above the forest border with distinctive ecology and extensive alpine meadows that together support more than 2000 animal and plant species. These high-altitude habitats are relatively rare across Europe, making the area noteworthy for nature observation.
